John is one of the founders of Mangioni Biggs + Co. He is a commercial litigation specialist with more than 25 years’ experience, acting in a large number of matters in various jurisdictions, including the Supreme Courts of New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland, and the Federal Court and the High Court of Australia.

John’s expertise spans trade practices, corporations law, class actions, intellectual property, real property, employment, taxation, trusts, estates (including family provisions claims), defamation, and regulatory matters.

John has acted for and against major Australian, international and multinational corporations, as well as for high-net-worth individuals and families, in a wide variety of disputes and litigious matters. Recognised by his peers in ‘Best Lawyers’ and ‘Doyle’s Guide’, John is often retained in large-scale commercial litigation matters, including bet-the-farm litigation, and in complex corporate and commercial disputes.

Experience

John’s past litigation and regulatory matters have included:

  • Acting for Pankaj & Radhika Owsal in their $2.5B proceeding against the ANZ Bank, Yara Fertilisers and Apache Corporation, a case regarded as "among the largest civil litigations in the history of the Supreme Court of Victoria".
  • Acting for ASX-listed Sirtex Medical in defending a $280M securities class action in the Federal Court of Australia.
  • Acting for the non-resident founder of an ASX-listed company in complex tax proceedings against the ATO, litigated in the Federal Court of Australia and on appeal in the Full Federal Court.
  • Acting for Australian private equity group Anchorage Capital Partners in trade mark litigation in the Federal Court of Australia.
  • Acting for the representative plaintiff in a $200M+ class action against Australian coal producer Whitehaven Coal in the Supreme Court of New South Wales.
  • Acting for EMTV, a PNG Government owned TV station, in defending Supreme Court of New South Wales proceedings brought by the International Management Group, in relation to rugby league broadcast rights.
  • Acting for Alan Dixon, one of the defendant directors in the $350M Dixon Advisory investor class action litigated in the Federal Court of Australia.
  • Acting for the Australian wool growers statutory body Australian Wool Innovation in complex Federal Court of Australia proceedings against animal rights campaigners PETA concerning alleged secondary boycott contraventions.
  • Acting in a number of complex and long running multi-million dollar trust, estate and family provisions claim proceedings concerning a high-net-worth Australian family.
  • Acting for a senior executive of a leading Australian advertising agency in wrongful termination proceedings in the Supreme Court of New South Wales.
  • Representing many prominent individuals in the Australian financial services industry in regulatory examinations and enforcement proceedings conducted by ASIC, the ACCC, the ATO, the ACIC (the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission), and other State and Federal regulatory bodies.
  • Representing numerous company directors, executives, and shareholders in company and shareholder disputes of all kinds, including in an advisory capacity in non-litigious matters.
